No train conductor, no train ride : how 'swap lockers' keep the trains moving
The Belgian National Railway Company (NMBS/SNCB) relies on smart devices – smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches – for its train conductors to perform their duties efficiently. However, when these devices malfunction, it poses a significant challenge: conductors need a quick and seamless way to obtain a replacement without disrupting their work.
The Challenge
NMBS/SNCB required a solution that would allow conductors to swiftly swap faulty devices for a functioning replacement without manual intervention or delays. The existing process of device replacement was cumbersome, often involving paperwork, long wait times, and logistical inefficiencies. NMBS/SNCB sought a secure, automated, and user-friendly system to streamline this process.
The Solution
To meet this need, Mobile Locker and its software partner Cu.be Solutions collaborated developed a robust software solution that integrated directly with the smart locker system. The key features of the solution included:
Automated QR Code Access: When a conductor encounters a faulty device, they call a third-party helpdesk. The helpdesk system generates a unique QR code, which the conductor can scan at the Mobile Locker system.
Seamless Device Swap: Upon scanning the QR code, a locker containing a replacement device automatically opens. This ensures a touch-free, hassle-free exchange process.
Step-by-Step Guidance: The locker’s screen displays detailed instructions on how to transfer essential components, such as swapping a SIM card in a phone, ensuring a smooth transition to the new device.
API Integration: The system communicates in real-time via APIs with the helpdesk provider, ensuring that the status of the faulty device and its replacement are accurately tracked and the locker system can be replenished with new devices, while the faulty ones are brought to a supplier for repair.
Security & Accountability: The system ensures that only authorized personnel can access a replacement device, preventing misuse and enhancing asset tracking.
Implementation & Challenges
Cu.be Solutions developed the custom software that connects Mobile Locker’s infrastructure with the helpdesk’s API. One of the key challenges was ensuring a fast and secure authentication process using QR codes while maintaining strict device-tracking protocols. Additionally, the user experience needed to be intuitive enough for conductors to complete a swap without assistance.
Impact & Results
NMBS/SNCBSince implementing the solution, NMBS/SNCB has seen significant improvements:
Reduced Downtime: Conductors can now swap devices in minutes at over 60 stations, ensuring they remain operational without disruptions.
Enhanced Efficiency: The automated process eliminates paperwork and reduces dependency on in-person device exchanges.
Improved User Experience: The step-by-step guidance ensures conductors can complete swaps easily, even without prior technical knowledge.
Real-Time Tracking: The API integration allows NMBS/SNCB to monitor device swaps and inventory status instantly.
Conclusion
Thanks to the collaboration between Cu.be Solutions and Mobile Locker, NMBS/SNCB now has a fully automated, secure, and user-friendly smart device swap system that keeps train conductors equipped and operational. This innovation not only optimizes NMBS/SNCB’s workflow but also sets a precedent for smart locker-based asset management in the transportation sector.
